Since perusing your forum I realized I was in need of a few books. I purchased volume 2 Schwing and Bert’s red book. I have a 63 with a grooved receiver # 158316A (on receiver) #158316 on the trigger group. The A is a polishing mark for test bluing as I learned. The serial number is quite a bit earlier than the red book mentions for grooved receiver production. My rifle,I believe is 1956 production. The rifle appears new and unwired. Any comments from the members and especially Bert would be much appreciated.

From my limited observations the Model 63 got its groove on somewhere between 15663X and 15826X, making yours the second lowest that I have noted.
There are no records for the Model 63 available at Cody, and all of the Year ending DOMs listed in the Red Book are estimates. I personally have to claim ignorance when it applies to my knowledge of the Model 63. It was my friend and co-author Larry Shennum who complied and wrote the majority of the section in chapters 5 & 6 covering this model.

Thanks 3Dub and Bert. I guess a question would be,were all rifles grooved after, say 156xxx or intermittently mixed with smooth receivers? Probably no way of knowing without Cody records. It appears this change occurred earlier than the last 10,000 rifles, per the red book. I would have never known what the A suffix was without my new books.
