So I just bought a Winchester, sold as a 1906. The serial number from what I can tell puts it at 1927 production, the barrel is marked MOD. 06 but does not have a double proof mark like I have seen when replacement barrels are discussed. So is my barrel replaced or is my gun a Model 06?

Awesome, thank you for clearing that up!
They did the same thing with all Winchesters. Saved on tooling cost. Technically, it is still a M1906, just as the M94 is still a M1894. These markings are usually from when the rifle was first produced. Shortcuts? Always shortcuts. Big Larry
