Good morning,
I am always a little leery (read a LOT leery) of wonderful rifles, in uncommon configurations, that also have a box, with pamphlets, and a peep sight just for a little more enticement to spend lots and lots of dollars. So…. when I saw two “supermodel” 61’s pop up today on Winchester Grove’s listing on Guns International the hair on the back of my neck started to tingle. Top of my head has no hair to be tingled.
The early, OB Short Only rifle, with box, SN 9751, with peep sight still in its box was seen before on GB out of Hebron, KY. At that time it had a Lyman scope on it. Now it is absolutely perfect and only $9000. So I would be ever so suspicious of the authenticity of this rifle. I will say that it is interesting that the listing describes the rifle as “New In Very Nice Original Picture Box” Is that code for “may not be authentic?” https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/rifles/winchester-rifles-model-61/winchester-model-61-22-octagon-short.cfm?gun_id=101338607
And since that is a possibility then one should walk ever so softly while looking at the other OB, Long Rifle only example that is also “perfect” and also has a box with papers and SN 61553 and is a steal at only $7000. See the same description wording there also. https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/rifles/winchester-rifles-model-61/winchester-model-61-nib-long-rifle.cfm?gun_id=101338642
Email me for images if you want. [email protected] The SN’s have been added to the “Sticky” listing at the head of this forum.

Second rifle (LR) looks pretty good. Nice work. First rifle the good quality photos reveal something less than the excellent restoration work I’ve come to expect from Grove et al.
Good eye, Michael! Keep up the good work.

Might just have to make him an offer on both! I don’t think anyone can be thankful enough for this website and the people involved. The constant eyes about, trying to keep everyone honest and aware. I have personally been saved from making a bad buy from things I have learned here. However it also sometimes makes you buy something that you learned about because your confident it’s real- to me it’s a win win. All the hard work is appreciated guys!
Though I hate to see crooks get away with this kind of fakery, I’ve got no sympathy for the fat-cats with more money than brains who buy them. Someone should send the buyers copies of those previous auction listings; it could be done anonymously. If holes have been plugged, no matter how good the work, they can be detected by magnafluxing, x-rays, & probably other technologies I don’t know about, & if you’ve got 9 Gs to blow, you can easily afford to have such an examination carried out.
