I can’t help with your obtaining the books your looking for, but I love your idea of a shooting gallery. The one rather serious problem is finding the correct ammunition. Now you may be asking what do you mean? These rifles use 22 ammo, short, long or long rifle. But at galleries they used frangible ammunition. The threat of ricochet injury is high with 22’s and this special ammo prevented this. I have a friend who bought a commercial shooting gallery trailer. They are actually for airguns, but he beefed up the tipover targets to handle 22, but had to build a polycarbonate bullet type proof screen for ricochet protection. No one makes gallery ammo any longer.

Hey Vince, thanks for the reply. You are right about the frangible ammo. I think it was sintered zinc, or something like that. I have looked at my options, and decided to go with safety glasses, also, the range will be 20 mtrs (not the usual twelve feet or so, like the galleries). I will be trialing ammo, but hope to keep it to low energy shorts. Also, I will angle all the surfaces (target area) downwards, to deflect the projectiles down. I know its not perfect, but hey, we do our best. Anyway, sure seems a lot safer than white water speed boating, bungee jumping and all the other crazy stuff that tourists do here in NZ.
Didn’t realize you were in NZ! I’m sure you guys are not as legal suit happy as most in the US. Best of luck with your project. Don’t forget to angle all surfaces, it’s the shots that miss the target that will get you.

Welcome to the forum. I’ve recently purchased both volumes of Schwing’s slide action 22 books and can assure you that the going price is not cheap. You may be able to find copies in estate or garage sales but that could be a bit of an undertaking. I like your shooting gallery idea.

Why not CB Shorts, if they’re sold in NZ?
… thats what I meant 😉
I have tried them out, they flatten out on the steel and just drop a few inches away. Ideal.
The only issue is, here in NZ we are at the mercy of the supply, which means we get some ammo, but cant always rely on what sort and how long between stock. So, I might have to use other ammo when the CB’s run dry. So I’m intending on making the range as suitable for most types of .22 rim fire as possible. Lots of trials before hand. Also, its a long term project too.

That is a wonderful idea of a shooting range! But, you might as well suck it up and pay the money for the books.
Well I realise that I wont get them for nothing, but, I have seen them offered here for less than ridiculous prices.
I wonder, why they don’t re-print the book. It would sell out I’m pretty sure! Then again, it would upset all of those who paid dearly for their copies I guess.
