Hi, I am new to the forum, therefore the topic may has been raised in another thread, which I did not found so far. A short introduction of myself is at the bottom, if someone was interested in.
I recently acquired a Winchester 1906, mfg in 1907 in a rather fair condition.
There is an “exotic” front sight on it, wear and patina seems to fit to the rifle.
I assume, this was a replacement of the original front sight at some time ago.
- Does anyone know from what firearm it came in first time
- Would you leave it on or replace it?
- What type of front sight was originally mounted on these early 1906’s? I found some online, like 77A, 77C, some with a single screw, some without
- Any hint, where I can get a suitable original or good replica front sight?
Thank you for any information, suggestions and hints!
***Introduction**
Due to professional background I started collecting firearms some years ago.
I like to have a variety of the different action systems and technologies, I am not into collecting certain brands. Therefore some Winchester rifles came in my collection as well. I like revolvers, uncommon pistol locking systems and I like to have some lines of development of a kind of firearm.Since I inheritated som of from my family, one of it are Swiss Army sidearms.
Winchesters:
- Mod 94 XTR
- Mod 94 Canadian Centennial
- 1300
- Super Grade XTR
Looks homemade to me…though why anyone would put that much effort into such a monstrosity defies understanding; though I have to say it would provide good protection in trench-warfare. No point I can see in leaving it in place if you really wish to shoot the rifle. We have a member here, Ben, who deals in sights, & if he doesn’t have what you need, you’ll find plenty of originals on ebay.
I would say its homemade and designed by someone with a military back ground. I would replace it. What are the other sights on it? If they are standard then replace it with the standard sight.

In a word, UGLY. My 1906, 22 short only from 1906 # 21675, has a M77-A front sight with a tiny tin globule and a patent date. Get with Ben and get the sight changed out. An exotic sight would be a Lyman #5A Combination. Very few M1906’s had special order sights. I have such a rifle in my collection. Big Larry
Good news – I found a 77C which is shipped to Switzerland, latter is a bit a burden when shopping for gunparts in the US.
Last question: is there a direction in which you take a 1906 front sight out (like in view down the barrel)?
Thank you all for your advice, have a goat weekend!

Agreed on all the above and contacting Ben. And welcome Goatkeeper! I’m at work, where all I have is goat screws!
Now I am interested in those goat screws!
HAHHAAAA I just noticed you’re in Switzerland and that term may be strange to you when something around here in Texas is a damn mess, and it’s not a cluster ****, then it’s a “goat screw.”

Probably very hard to find a real nice M1906 in Switzerland. Hard enough here in the USA. Big Larry
I actually saw a later model, like 62? in .22LR, but it was sold, and the guy offered me that 1906. At first I was “naah” but after doing a bit of research, I went for it – what a cool piece of of bullet releasing by enlighted powder machine…
