Update… called my friend and informed him of his good fortune… he was stunned. With Washington states crazy laws, I’m going to have to do a 4473 “transfer” so I can bring the rifle to Cody. Technically, it will be mine during that time, but I will be transferring it back to him when I get home. Talking with JWA, I think I might do a single gun display for the fun of it. Will get to Cody early to see if I can get a letter for it… this is way too much fun. 🙂
Nice! I’ll definitely be looking for it….and apparently, I’ll look for JWA so I can get that movie star photo and autograph!

Does the rifle look like this one? Most M1906’s have really taken a beating. This is the nicest one I could find. Very accurate 22. Big Larry
Beautiful rifle!
Thanks. About a year or so ago, I started collecting the M1906. I found that there were few nice rifles out there to collect, so I turned my attention to Smith and Wessons. 99% of the M1906’s you will find for sale, are beaters. Big Larry

Larry, would THIS one be good enough? Every 1906 collection should have a matted brl.

If you’re really going to go to that much trouble, you might as well buy the bio to display with it; possibly it contains some reference to the award.
Yes, I am going to way too much trouble… I bought a book off Amazon “
hould arrive in about 10 days (in time for Cody). I’m going to print up everything I’ve found and bring it with me. Honestly, this is way too much fun. The cost isn’t all that much. I’ve contacted Jessica at the Center of the West to see if the rifle letters, if it does, I’m going to buy that too… Stuff like this doesn’t happen that often in life and I’m really getting so much enjoyment out of the “hunt”! There are bound to be photos of her in the BB archives, though probably group photos of the whole Wild West entourage; but maybe some of her alone giving her performance, such as the one above doing the mirror trick. I wonder if it’s possible to search these photos, or some of the collection, online?

Ben-
Try this link…
http://library.centerofthewest.org/digital/search/searchterm/gable
There are at least a dozen publicity photos in the McCraken Library digital archives from her time with Buffalo Bill Cody that can be downloaded. In case the above link doesn’t display only the search results, just try searching “All Collections” in the Library for the word “Gable”.
Good Luck!!!

Any chance this is a pic of Nan Aspinwall Gable holding your friend’s gun? Article from the Winchester Herald Volume 3 Number 4 (1923) in the McCracken Library.

Lou… you are amazing! I’ll be holding one of those today! I’ll post pics later. Thanks everyone for their assistance & encouragement on this quest… very satisfying. I just added a day to my hotel stay in Cody so I can spend time at the museum… So, Clarence, the way this is going, this rifle may very well end up in Cody for posterity sake.

For Clarence-
What Ted posted was a screenshot of a wyomingpublicmedia.org web page, so the link to the recording is not active. Try going here and clicking the play arrow. Works for me…
