They drill out the bore and then stick a liner or tube in that has the new rifling. If you have a guy that does not know what he’s doing line one you will see the liner at the end of the barrel or you will see a bulge inside after you fire it. The cheap ones are thin liners (pencil liners) and if the guy drilling it has a cheap or bad drill, it starts to go off center, then he starts drilling from the other end. When he gets done you end up with a void on the outside of the liner. If they don’t use a filler like epoxy to fill the void you end up with the liner fire forming to the void or the oversize drill. The better liners are thicker to the point they are strong enough to be a barrel by themselves and have enough meat they can be welded in place. Now they real crafty gunsmith can reline it where you will never know it was done.

Here is a place that relines but I have no idea as to the quality of there work.

How about getting in touch with Mike Hunter. If he does them, it will be done right!

His work is satisfactory for a boy’s rifle, light-weight repeater, or any other gun for which so-so accuracy, let’s say 2+ MOA, is good enough.  (Ask me how I know.)  If your standard is 1 MOA or less, TJ’s liners ( (859) 635-5560) are considered the best available, though he doesn’t install them himself. One highly regarded smith who uses them is John Taylor, Puyallup, Wa., but he’s snowed under with work, so expect a long wait from him.

I used John Taylor a few years back to reline my 92 rifle in 32WCF. Does great work but even back then it was several months. I’ve waited upwards of two years for the services of an exceptional gunsmith so I didn’t mind a bit.
