Here is another one to be very careful with…  listed in the December RIA “Premier” auction;

As it is today – https://www.rockislandauction.com/detail/78/1017/winchester-deluxe-model-1890-takedown-rifle

As it was back in 2009 – https://www.cowanauctions.com/lot/winchester-model-1906-pump-action-rifle-74942

Caveat Emptor!

Did anyone send RIA this info? Just wondered what they would do if they knew this…probably nothing. To me, the pictures of RIA just scream “refinished”!

So swapping out stocks and adding a tang site, gets someone an additional $10,000.00.

Hmm. Interesting.

You missed the new 24-inch octagon barrel versus the 20-inch round barrel…

Even the cost of that is insignificant compared to the “Deluxe” value.  But ’90s & ’06s have separate serial no. ranges–how’d the faker get around that?

Clarence,

The separate serial number ranges ended at 713199 and 685999 respectively (on March 10, 1926).  At that time, Winchester merged the serialization of the Model 90 and Model 06, and dropped the “A” and “B” receiver designation markings.  I discussed this in more detail in explanation of the research survey here – https://winchestercollector.org/forum/winchester-research-survey-discussion/model-90-06-62-62a-survey/

Wine and whiskey improve with age. Apparently the same is sometimes true of Model 90’s. Reckon they aged it in a sherry cask? 😉

Here is an email I received today from RIA…good reply in my opinion!

Mr. Claflin,

Let me start by saying thank you for your email bringing this matter to our attention. When issues or potential issues are bought to our attention we are able to fix many situations, so I’m glad that you decided to share this with us. As a result the Winchester in question has been pulled from the auction and our consignor informed. It is very unfortunate that someone has changed this gun into something it didn’t start its life out as. The metal on the gun is still original and they added the matching assembly numbers on the tang, butt stock, buttplate, and of course changed the barrel. All in the attempt the fool people and increase the value of this gun.

Sincerely,
Laurence Thomson
