It’s me again. Sadly. This rifle was originally a standard rifle and was sold out of Lock Stock & Barrel. It now shows up at Morphy as a Short only OB with a fancy red letter engraved receiver just to make it oh so much more valuable of a fake!!! Watch out for it again some place else. https://www.proxibid.com/aspr/C-Rare-Special-Order-Near-Mint-Pre-War-Octagon-Barrel-Winchester-Model-61-Gallery-Rifle-1941/42377999/LotDetail.asp?lid=42377999
Here is the current rifle as listed at Morphy:
And here are some relevant images from the LS&B listing:
I will notify Morphy of the rifle.

At least they were upfront about the box being a reproduction.

Hello to all,
I received this very nice reply from Tony Wilcox at Morphy earlier this afternoon. I will reach out and talk to him tomorrow. I appreciate his positive response.
Thanks for all your supportive input.

I would like to personally thank you for bringing to our attention the issues with the Fake Model 61 discovered in our upcoming auction. This rarely happens but with help from collectors such as yourself perhaps we can reduce the amount of forgery that occurs in our industry.
As you know we guarantee the full description of every item offered. When issues like this occur the item is immediately removed from the sale. I will personally contact the consigner and discuss this issue. Unfortunately I do not know whether the current owner is the culprit or a victim.
I would like to thank you again for your assistance . And if ever you need any help please feel free to contact me at any time.

I wonder if we’re looking at two different guns. From what I could see the LS&B rifle had better wood than the Morphy rifle. OTOH the serial number looks the same, just touched up on the auction rifle. Sounds like Morphy is doing the right thing, good for them!

Good morning,
A further update. I called Tony Wilcox of Morphy auction and we had a wonderful lengthy conversation regarding the particular rifle in question and the problem of fakery within our hobby. He was fully supportive of our efforts to expose the culprits and his company will not allow those responsible to bid or consign with them. I will continue to work on this effort and keep you all up to date.
I also had a great conversation with the owner of Lock Stock & Barrel and they are exceedingly helpful and supportive. There will be more to come from that information when I get it organized.
