I have my grandfathers 1940 model 74 .22 short only gun, serial # 37832 and I am searching for a complete bolt assembly, does anyone have a source Where I can purchase an original bolt assembly for this rifle?

My grandfather past away in 1990 and  somewhere along the line the bolt was removed and lost.

I have been searching for some time and can only come up with long rifle parts.

I am trying to get this gun back together so my dad, who used to shoot this gun as a kid ( and will be 76 next week ) can shoot it again.

Any help on where I can find a complete bolt assembly or parts to put one together would be much appreciated.

Thanks- Tracy

Ebay is the best place to find the bolt assemblies.  They usually sell in the $75-$100 range and the .22 short versions show up routinely.

JWA,

I found the parts to fix my grandfathers 1940 model 74 .22 short and it shoots great, ended up finding parts on GunBroker…Thanks for your comments.

While I was looking for the bolt assembly for that gun, I came across ( and purchased ) a 1939 model 74, .22 short with a 4 digit serial number of 3709. It to is missing half of the bolt assembly parts but is otherwise in great condition.

I have reasearched these guns a lot and have looked at literally hundreds of photos of model 74’s and have not seen a single one like this gun. The loading port in the stock is directly above the back of the pistol grip area ( all others I have seen are in the middle of the stock, between the butt and pistol grip area) This gun’s bluing has aged to the blue/brown patina and it is clearly visible that it had a shell deflector installed at one time ( bluing is better in that area ) The end of the inner magazine tube is a round knurled knob, instead of the usual rectangular shaped knob. The stock is all original as well and is dark walnut with very few dings.

The parts I have for the bolt appear to be different then the 1940 model I have.

Have you or any other WACA members ever seen one like this or have any info on this early model 74? How rare is it and what may the value be?

I believe it could be a first year, first month of production gun from 1939, based off of the number produced in 1939 and that it is a 4 digit serial number.

Any thoughts or comments on this gun would be appreciated

Thanks

Tracy

Thanks for the update and glad you got your 74 back in operation!

It sounds like you have a first year .22 short catalog Model G7421R Model 74 “Gallery Special” rifle.  They were offered from 1939-1952 and came with the 75D front sight and 32E rear sight.  The first year Model 74’s (all five catalog models) were slightly different than the later models with regard to the inner magazine tube knob which was round and knurled as well as a few other minor variations.  The early Model G7421R had the stock loading port located further forward.

While the early Model 74’s and the G7421R are not particularly rare on their own, the combination of first production year and G7421R make your rifle a little more desirable than a later version.

I just bought a very nice (about 95% condition) first year Model 74 with all the features you mention at Tulsa for $400.  There were several for sale there.

Finding parts for the very early (1939) bolts can be a bit tricky.  I have been looking for a stock and some parts for one of my early ones for quite awhile.

Drop me an email at Abendshien @ Aol .com (delete the spaces) and let me know exactly what you need and maybe I can help.

Hi Vince,

I have some NOS deflectors also, it was the OP that was needing one.

Thanks for the offer though.
