I’m a huge fan of the ’76. I’ve had at least 50 of them at one time in my collection, including the deluxe that Tom Sellect had and used in an NRA ad several years ago and one of only 22 carbines that went into the warehouse as a .50 Express. This one had a half nickel finish. Almost all have been sold off over the past 3 or 4 years, but I still have a very high condition standard sporting rifle in .50 Express and a .45-75 carbine. I also have all of the various boxes of ammo, reloading tools and molds for all of the 1876 calibers, including a boxed set of 1894 model tool, mold and all accessories in .50-95 Express.

Rick, I have the Tom Selleck 76 used in the March 1999 Newsweek NRA add, s/n 54209. Are we talking about the same gun? T/R
Rick, Four gun shipment, three 45/60 and one caliber left blank. The 40/60 was between the third and fourth gun to a different order number, all four were 26″ barrels, stock half inch shorter, and half inch drop. They probably went to the same shooter. The letter from Selleck is made out to John Hawk in 1999, can you shed light on that? T/R
John had the rifle for several years, before I bought it from him. I kept if for some time before selling it to Craig, along with several other high condition 76’s. John is a close friend and we talked 76’s all the time. He had the largest collection of Mountie carbines in the country at one time, with at lease one gun from every shipment that went north, including early carbines that went through Ft. Benton. When he sold his collection, I bought a lot of his guns and all of his ’76 ammo and Winchester reloading tools and mold.

Rick,
I have one of Johns ’76’s as well. A standard Third Model 45-60 in 85% condition. Nothing exciting about the configuration, but a nice looking rifle.

Very nice. It has a great vernier tang sight, too. John has a great eye for nice and rare items. As I mentioned, I bought as much as I could afford at the time he was selling out and then over time, I sold the remainder of this ’76 collection as per his instructions. Several months later, while working in the shop, the UPS truck shows up. Not unusual, except this time the driver set a rifle hard case on the floor. I recognized the case as one I had used to ship a gun to John. I’m thinking, he sure went a lot of trouble and expense to send back my case, until I picked it up. Inside was a really nice 3rd model ’73 carbine in .44 caliber along with the factory letter. No note, no nothing, so I called him. He said, “well it’s just a thank you gift for helping me sell the collection”. I was in shock.
What an absolutely gorgeous deluxe ’76!! If I lived anywhere near you I would love to come over and do a photo session with your 1876 and produce a photo worthy of being framed, matted, and hung on the living room wall. Alas, I live in Canada so it won’t be happening, but you’ve made my day with those photos of your stunning 76. (by the way, if you’d like to take a peek at some of my nature photos, here’s the link.
