Is it a rim fire or center fire?Bob
It is a centerfire. I am at Mike Venturino’s house right now trying to find a way to get a bullet seated into a 44 Russian case and fit into the chamber. A re-sized Russian case will fit but when a bullet is seated in the brass, it won’t fit in the chamber…
Shrapnel (and Mike),
A standard 44 AMERICAN will chamber in my centerfire modified 1866 carbine. I wrote an article on that some time ago, which will provide some measurements of various cartridges compared to the 44 Henry Centerfire cartridge.
What you will need is a heeled bullet, I believe, as a normal .44 bullet will then cause the brass to swell too much to chamber, plus depending on the ogive, may be too long in Russian brass. If you need dimensions, etc, I can either go back and find the issue I wrote the article in, and cite that, or regurgitate the dimensions.

I have shot a 66 round barrel rifle in original black powder rim fire. I bought the rifle at a local gun show in the late 80’s on Saturday and then found some Canadian Dominion rim fires for $5 each and bought 4 of them. Took it home and fired the first one off, looked down the barrel and couldn’t see any rifling, it was just black. I put the next one in and that one I had to hit twice to make it go. I still have the empty cases. Interestingly is the back of the case ballooned out to make contact with the bolt face. The next day I went back and bought the rest of the shells he had.
