Excellent advice, Rick. I was so impressed I joined on my first visit, IIRC. First issue of the magazine was awesome, had no idea! Well worth the price.

Another thing you may want to look at, Mike, is the membership packages available at the Cody Museum. Not only do they include free admission but serial number searches and letters are also available with some packages. Almost forgot, discounts in the gift shop and I’m sure I’ve forgotten other benefits. On top of that you’ll be supporting a wonderful museum.

They also have reciprocal benefits at other museums. I’m a CFM member (never been – yet) but get member benefits here in Los Angeles at the Autry Museum of the American West. It’s no Cody, but a bonus in addition to CFM benefits. Maybe you have a museum near you that is in the network. Another thing to think about.

Mike,

Welcome, and the Forum is showing it’s stuff to you in spades ! The memberships in WACA & Cody are very rewarding. You’ll not regret it….and the Cody membership is partially tax deductible

Supergimp just opened my eyes to the Autry Museum benefit ! I live 60 miles south and will be going in the near future.

Never been to the Cody show, but will be this year.

See you there !

Steve, TX, Rick, and Bill,

All good things to think about.  Gotta be careful memberships don’t eat into vacation money but I have already come to conclusion to join, just a matter of timing.

Wish I could make it to the Cody Show as it looks outstanding but it’s a big trip from Indiana.

Will figure out this picture thing and get a few on the forum.

thanks again.

Mike

Madis book delivered.  Loving it!  Scoured through the pictures of my ’73.  Looks like the only special item is it has a bronze/brass Rocky Mountain site.  Will get letter ordered while in Cody.  Joined the museum to get my two Winchesters letters.  Will join this group when we get back from trip.

Thanks for all of your help.  Good group here.Kiss

Welcome! Bruce is probably giving good advice but I’m single so not too worried about part of his prediction. On another forum we theorized that something happens after you bring home your second or third Winchester levergun. Pretty soon things start happening in that safe and before you know it there’s a half-dozen or more and within a year or so the safe will be crowded or spilling over into a second safe.

Hasn’t happened at my house, of course, but I’ve heard it HAS happened to some people I know. Wink

One piece of collecting equipment I can recommend is an old, well-worn soft gun case. Keep it in your car and when a levergun follows you home (despite your best efforts to shoo it away) you can use it to smuggle your new acquisition past SWMBO until you can figure out how to tell her about it.

Spoken like a man in the know. Know how I knowWink

Been a while since I’ve posted to the forum, certainly not since I joined WACA.

We went West last summer.  Wife and I left the Cody museum early (around noon) unfortunately due to a snowstorm (in late May) that closed Yellowstone and our stop for the night was to be in Jackson.  We had to drive South and then go North into Jackson through the Togwotee (sp?) mountain pass which was still open by the time we got there.  added 4-5 hours onto our drive to Jackson.

Just before we left, a friend of mine sold me a ’57 Winchester 94 carbine in great condition.  It came with a soft gun case and it made it past my lovely bride sight unseen.  Serial 2319310.  great shooter.

As for levers “propagating”, I can attest.  It spawned a new Henry in 44-40.  I also have my original 44-40 1873 Winchester parts out for CCH-ing by Turnbull.  20170309_211800.jpgImage Enlarger20170309_211808.jpgImage EnlargerOverall-Henry.jpgImage Enlarger20170323_155822.jpgImage EnlargerDay-3.2_Cody-Museum-of-the-West_Guns-that-Won-the-West-1873-Winchesters-Colt-SAAs.jpgImage EnlargerDay-3.2_Cody-Museum-of-the-West_Winchester-Model-97-trench-guns.jpgImage Enlarger

Welcome to WACA! Joining the museum was a good move as well, sorry you had to cut your visit short. Great excuse for going back sometime soon. Can’t say you weren’t warned about leverguns showing up semingly out of nowhere, looks like your collection is coming along nicely.

Mike

Thanks, Mike.

I want to go back to Cody as soon as we can.  Had a great time on the trip.  I was just finished up in the basement of the firearms museum when we got the news about the weather.  I didn’t see any of the rest of the museum complex-luckily my wife had gone to some of the other parts and got some pictures for me to enjoy.  The last to photos in my post were from the museum.  Will definitely go again since they’re doing the mass renovation!

I’m a shooter who shoots precision and a couple types of competitions including SASS.  I always say ‘life is too short to shoot ugly guns’.  The ’73 above didn’t even have the correct round barrel on the receiver (although it is a marked Winchester replacement barrel) and the letter showed nothing special and it obviously was missing the rest of the parts.  It’s going to be exactly the way I would have ordered one with a S# from 1881!

I won’t do a lot of shooting on the 1957 ’94 and I certainly won’t modify it because it’s in great shape!  The guy who sold me this one had a ’73 carbine with a bulged barrel and wood with tack holes throughout.  He bought it off a reservation.  Maybe that will someday travel to my safe …Laugh
