I won gunauction.com #14829188 yesterday.  Scroll down to see all the photos.  I know enough about Model 70s to get myself in trouble when I find something I like.  I liked what I saw and took a chance on this auction.  I could only find the sling and period scope to be non Winchester.  So please feel free to help educate me with what I may have over looked in my excitement of finding a 300 Win. Mag.

Nice gun. Someone swapped the original slings swivels out and it looks like the gun may have been stored on the recoil pad.

Hi Roger-

Good price for a 300 WIN MAGNUM in nice shape. Laugh The Redfield 3-9X scope is probably contemporary to the rifle as well, so is a nice little bonus if the optics are clear.

The type III-4 action and 1963 serial number are right for the chambering.  The metal finishes look correct.  I didn’t see a photo of the barrel markings, so I’m taking it for granted the rifle in not a rechambered 30-06, but it’s a safe enough bet that it’s the real thing.  Hopefully there is no glass bedding in the barrel channel.

My only “quibbles” with the rifle are the one Ted pointed out, i.e. that the owner put Uncle Mike’s swivel studs in place of the original 1″ fixed swivels (which is a very easy fix of you want it original), and I would want to look closely at the stock finish and checkering to see if they’ve been redone.  I cannot say anything without the gun in hand, so don’t read anything into this, but the “color” of those very late narrow panel checkering stocks tend on average to be a “lighter” brown due to a change made in the filler color in the early 1960s. This one looks to have a darker color in the photos, like a 1950s finish (except that it is definitely a correct late stock based on the checkering).

I’m curious what others think…

Best,

Lou

Thanks for your input.  Which swivels are correct for the late model 70?

The left pair has a flat shoulder that meets the wood and the right pair has raised shoulder.

The “Rule Book” shows both, but not a definitive answer.

Thanks,  RDB

Hi Roger-

Ohhhh… Maybe both???  I’m learning something here…

The fore end swivel escutcheon on the two sets I just looked at in my parts pile are both like the one one the left.  Flat…  But maybe there was a change at some point?  Pre-64 or post-63 or earlier?  I don’t know…  I’d have to take down some guns I do not have here in SC to say what’s on these late M70s…

Maybe if seewin has read this he can advise???

Best,

Lou

I think you will find that the rear screw uses the narrow shoulder (.036″) thick, and the front screw uses the thick shoulder (.135″) thick.

Thanks Steve-

You are right, of course.  I misunderstood the question, as I thought Roger was talking about a difference in the front swivel escutcheon (my bad eyes combined with my small laptop computer screen)!!!  Embarassed

Thanks Guys.  The confusing thing is that you would think that the swivles would come in a pair.  Matching front to rear.  The wood screws or rear swivels, I pictured, each have a different base that meets the wood and the same with the front swivels with the escutcheon.  The pairs in the “rule Book” don’t match either.  That is what I am trying to determine.

Update on the swivels:

Received the model 70 today.  Of course I immediately checked the bore and then proceeded to look for any irregularities that might be a problem.  Found nothing that a little TLC wouldn’t fix.  The sling swivels were the first concern.  Both the front and rear Uncle Mike’s swivels had the shoulder that actually goes into a relief or counter sink in the stock  The front swivel has the same thread as the factory Winchester swivel, so I didn’t have to remove the stock to switch it.  Cleaned the bore and chamber and found no crud or residue or traces of copper.  The bolt face still has most of the bluing present, so it wasn’t fired much.  Used some lemon oil to clean the stock off and it even cleaned the dirt off the pad.  The scope is extremely clear and functions perfectly.  The only problem encountered was the sticking of the floor plate release button.  Carefully Kroiled it and used a tooth brush handle to work it loose.  The stock looks a lot better and overall I think I have a real good gun.  One thing I did notice, the receiver finish differs from the barrel finish, not as black and not as finely polished.  I believe this to be correct, let me know if am I misinformed on this?   I do appreciate your help, thanks to all.  RDB
