Can anyone help me identify these marks that are not the WP proof?  This is a 1981 Model 70 Featherweight XTR; a “transition” with SN, G1532XXX.  There is no mention of Olin or USRA anywhere on the rifle, WRA recoil pad etc.

This may not be the right place to ask since this is a little more modern than most are into but I though I would try.  I sure appreciate any help or guidance on where to ask.

Chip,

The additional proof marks appear to be British.

Thanks Bert, no kidding.  Have you actually seen these marks before?

It’s hard to tell in the picture but the receiver has a slight purple hue (like an old Leupold scope gets) that literally only goes half way back and ends at a noticeable line.  To the rear of that line is “normal” colored blue.

Thanks again,

Chip

Yes. “no kidding”.  It is also possible that they might be Belgian proof marks.  Your picture is not clear enough to fully discern the markings.  That stated, they are in the correct location for both British proof marks or Belgian proof marks.

That would indicate all of the marks on it are Finnish.  I could see any of them clearly enough.  Good job identifying it!

Thank you very much Vince.  I have attached better pictures.  Hopefully they will be clear enough this time

I really do appreciate the help.  Im very curious to figure out what they mean and/or where they came from.

Ah HA!  I think I figured it out.  These are German proof marks.  The “bird” with the N under it is a “definitive nitro proof for all guns” from Ulm.  The antler is the house that did the proof; also Ulm.  The two letters indicate the year the proof was conducted.  In my case, the letters indicate 1982 which also fits since this is a 1981 rifle.

Im wondering if it was shipped to Germany or if a US citizen took it there; a service member maybe.

Here are my sources.

Thanks again Bert and Vince.
