I always can count on the Tulsa show to find something you always wanted. You my have to look for a few shows but it pays off. I bought a Winchester Long Range Vernier set a few years back but it was missing the long range staff. I found it at the show on Friday, setup day. I was kind of surprised it was cheaper than I expected and thought it might of been a repo but never heard of the Long Range sight being repoed. I looked it over and it was real.

Bob,

That’s a cool sight, in the box.  Great find. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve never been to the Tulsa show. Being from Western PA, it’s quite a ways off for me. Perhaps one day when I have more time I’ll take the drive out there.

Congrats, your persistence paid off! Do you have a rifle in mind for this sight?

Fantastic find, Bob, and that’s quite a collection under the glass!

No I don’t but I had the case that needed the sight. I always liked collecting sights and I’m glad I started many years ago since you don’t find them to often. Its for the time you buy the gun and it has the wrong sight or missing one that letters with them.

Isn’t that neat!!!!!!!!!!  Great find.  After about 25 years of searching, I found one for the Whitney-Kennedy Rifle!  It was a complete sight except for the screws.  It also did not come with the extras like you found.

I’m thinking about having it mounted on my old W-K in 45-70, despite it being a factory original piece.

Is the “C” shaped object at the top of the case a retainer for the front sight?

Mike

Indeed.  The set has the front sight retaining clip with and without the Spirit Level.  (I’m guessing it is called Spirit Level due to the fluid in the tube being alcohol and not due to any supernatural qualities.)

Mike,

The sight can be used with or without the spirit level as Wayne said but the function of the clip is to hold the different sight posts in the tube. The case set comes with different styles of front posts .

Thanks, guys. I’ll have to take a closer look next time I have the pleasure of seeing one. What type of rifle is this sight set generally found on? I’m thinking 1885’s and 1886’s and maybe 1876’s. I’m thinking it would be right at home on an 1885 BPCR or similar rifle.

Primarily it would be the 76 since it was made for long range shooting. The sight would have issues with the bolt on the 86. I don’t know if it was used on the  85.

Sacrilege!  I’d never put a genuine antique Winchester sight on an imitation!

Bob

There were a lot more Model 1885 Single Shot Rifles equipped with that sight than there were Model 1876 Lever-actions.  There are at least several thousand Model 1885 rifles that letter with the either a long-range or a mid-range graduated peep tang sight.  The higher end variations (Special Single Shot Rifles and Schuetzen Rifles) were standard with a graduated vernier peep sight.

Actually, I understand quite a few shooters play the BPCR game with original 1885’s. There’s a reason why folks are still building replicas.
