So…I inherited a Model 95 and trying to learn more about it. It’s a .30 Army and appears to be mostly standard as I’ve seen many online. However, I noticed a small stamping on the topside of the barrel where the barrel meets the receiver and a matching stamp on the topside of the receiver. The stamp is small and appears to be a “P” imposed over a W – not real sure. The gun is all original but has a flat butt plate – something I’ve not seen on other 1895’s. Would welcome any input on the stamp and flat butt plate.

Cousin Monty,

All Model 1895 Rifles, Carbines, and Muskets manufactured from July 1905 and later have the same superimposed “W” “P” (Winchester Proof) marking on the frame ring and the barrel. In fact, and with the exception of the 22 rim fire rifles, all Winchester models have the same marking on the barrel and receiver frame ring.
