I can understand your point Steve if we’re talking $15k & up for me. Advanced collecting requires advanced knowledge which comes with experience. I imagine everyone at some point has made an error in acquisition in their collecting career as a newbie or even after. My pockets aren’t deep enough to eat it or take the hit.
I can determine re-blue with confidence but this CCH stuff in this post has really opened my eyes. My end goal was to acquire a high condition high value CCH 86 someday, but in the process of doing my due diligence & homework, often these pieces are already sold so this might never happen.
I bought this gun from Randy Saba in Colorado Springs for less than $15K. It’s a 40-65 and would be worth more if it were a 45 or 50 cal. But to me $25k is getting near the 50 cal range. A 45-70 could be over the $15k with the CC. I recently messed up on a deluxe CC, checkered pistol grip, set triggers and shot gun butt, 86 in 45-70. It was offered to me for 12K. I should have bought it. When it went to auction it hammered for $18K. With the juice and taxes it would have been around $23 K to me.

Nice gun Chuck!!
yep, perfect. That is the way an aged case hardened receiver is supposed to look – you will never have it questioned and you will never have to make excuses. And, nice wood that matches, excellent wood to metal fit and from what we can see no buggered screws – it just screams “original”. If I was a young collector, knowing what I know now, I would by-pass all blued 86’s and look for guns like this.
Actually this gun has enough wear throughout most anyone would know this gun is correct. The rest of the gun is in great shape except the stock has more dings than I like. The bore is pristine. I slugged the barrel and have ordered some bullets. I’ll let you know how it shoots.
