Thanks for the comments Guys.
Yes, I’ve had a couple Deluxe M64’s but they were not pre-war so I sold them. I have a pre-war standard M64 carbine length that is 95%, really nice but it didn’t seem to fit the theme I had going with the two deluxe guns in the photo. I still don’t understand why the M65 didn’t see more production, what a cool little gun. I suppose the varmint calibers that were offered in the M65 were competing with the bolt guns by then.

That and the M92 carbine was cheaper. I have a very nice, early M64 pre war with the slim forend. About 98 or 99%. Standard model 30 WCF. I just wanted a nice M64 to accompany my 2 M55’s. Big Larry

Gary, I agree the deluxe rifles are very sharp. The M65 rifle standard or deluxe don’t seem to show up during my Winchester foraging hunts here in the North East. I was going to do a photo of my standard M71 and M64 both DOM 1952 but they don’t have the look and class of the pre war deluxe models, especially a M65. If I grab the 1949 M64 Deer Rifle I sent the photo of, Ill do a group photo of it with the standards and my deluxe 1948 M71. who knows maybe a M65 will appear.
Once again thank you for sharing your rifles.
Dan
There is a Model 65 Deluxe 218 Bee on GB right now that looks like it is going to hit somebody’s pocketbook pretty hard:

I’m curious about the picture showing the muzzle with what looks like a W stamped on it. Possibly relined by Winchester?
Mark,
That rifle has been refinished, but the question is who did it. The “W” on the bottom of the receiver is expected, and found on all of the Model 65 rifles made in that same serial number range. The “w” on the muzzle is strange, and I am having a hard time believing that Winchester would have done that, as it could potentially have affected the accuracy.

This seller’s been a topic of conversation in the past regarding peddling reworked/re-finished guns as factory originals. Do you think the bidders realize it’s a re-finished gun at that price? For this reason, this seller has been on my “never to buy from list” along with “Selling Dad’s Old Guns” for quite some time.

Regarding that re-finished 65 on Gunbroker, I note that he says, “The Gentleman that we are currently selling for has an INCREDIBLE COLLECTION . We are helping him liquidate his entire collection SO PLEASE STAY TUNED IN TO OUR LISTINGS!”
Looks like a good cover story for a never-ending supply of refinished guns.

I was watching that rifle as well, and wondered about the muzzle “W”. Have you ever seen that before, Bert? Seems awful strange to me as well. That rifle will likely bring over $6k, even being refinished.
Gary,
No, I have not ever seen a “W” stamped on the muzzle face.

I agree with the cover story note.

I’ve had these two awhile, but had them out today and realized how nice ( and similar ) they looked together so I took a few pictures. They are a couple of my favorites.Model 71 – s/n 3711, long tang, bolt peep, deluxe, 1936 DOM
Model 65 – s/n 1004578, 218 Bee, bolt peep, deluxe, 1939 DOM
I don’t think I have ever told a guy before that he had a nice pair! But you do!

Well, I guess I was just a bit on the conservative side on this GB Model 65 Deluxe. Somebody really wanted that rifle………….. and as the saying goes…..an old Winchesters values is determined by what two fools can agree on……… or in this case………….just how high two motivated bidders feel like pushing it. Id say this seller is going to be very happy with the $10k he just made.
