Another one that appealed to me as a shooter. I have about $500 in trade + shipping into it so the replacement (spur) pad plate and replacement Marbles rear sight don’t bother me too much at this point. I only wish whomever fit the pad plate to the stock would have done a better job, but it’s not meant to be collector grade by any means. Anyway, that’s what’s new. Redbook should be here today and when the retirement check comes in, I’ll join Cody to start actually putting information to the rifles in the safe. Regards, Ron

Ron,
I am confused by your statement…
I only wish whomever fit the pad to the stock would have done a better job,
The pictures you posted show a typical Model 1894 Shotgun butt stock with a hard rubber butt plate of the correct style for the date of manufacture. It does not appear to be a “pad”, or aftermarket installed. Please post close-up pictures showing the butt plate from all angles.

I meant butt plate, sorry. I made the statement assuming the plate isn’t original, due to how proud the wood appears particularly at the spur and the discoloration. If that’s a bad assumption, even better… glad to know what your thoughts are. Regards, Ron
Redbook wasn’t at the PO today; now I have something to hope for tomorrow.

Ron,
Your Winchester appears to have a factory installed hard rubber butt plate, albeit with some damage at the toe. Winchester intentionally fitted the stocks to be proud of the butt plate and the receiver frame & tangs.

OK, that’s good news. I knew about the chip prior to trading but honestly thought it was probably aftermarket- the crescent plates fit much better than this shotgun butt plate along the top- so that’s why I was thinking that… anyway- picked up a box of cowboy loads and since the action is tight and crisp, I see no reason why I shouldn’t let the old iron heat up a bit this weekend. Thanks for the feedback- I do appreciate it.

Nice rifle, harvested a deer this year with a 38-55 WCF 94 a year newer than yours this past season. Butt plate looks right to me as well, pretty easy to chip the toe with a bit of rough handling. Good move joining CFM, awesome museum and resource for collectors.
