Just acquired a m1894 1/2 mag carbine in 30WCF. Didn’t realize the rarity until browsing Renneberg’s book. It’s a grey gun but good bore & rifling and nice wood no issues & shotgun butt steel butt plate. DOM 1907. $500. Post some pics shortly.

Rick,

My friend Bob (Robert) needs to revise his information regarding 1/2 (button) magazine Carbines… they most certainly are not rare, or even all that uncommon. I have approximately (150) of them dcumented in my reserch survey. What is rare, is a Trapper Carbine with a 1/2 mag (I have found two of them thus far).

Thanks Bert. Good to know this. Glad I didn’t pay a premium for rarity. Appreciate the info as always.

Since you didn’t, & since it’s not as rare as you had believed, I’ll volunteer to take it off your hands for what you paid for it.  Of course, I’m sure you won’t mind covering shipping & the FFL charge.  Would be considerate to throw in a box of ammo, but I won’t insist on that.

Lol Clarence please tell me we will meet someday at a show or something. Better yet I will buy the beers or scotch…..as long as it doesn’t cost more than the ammo & shipping!!

Bert I just noticed the date on the barrel. I remember something about mis dated barrels.

Rick,

What is the serial number?  The  August 14 patent date error adds some interest to the gun.  The shotgun butt was a special order feature.  The 3-leaf Express sight and the 1/2 magazine were “optional” order features.

Thanks Al. I’ve paid more for a lot less & after reading Berts last reply I’m good with this find & the deal.

Bert:

Is it safe to assume that my 18″ baby carbine is one of the two you have noted?

Winchester – Model 1894 Special Order Short “Baby” Eastern Carbine 119046 30 W.C.F. 1901

Shipped 8/2/01

One of 12 documented 18” carbines.  Three leaf Express rear sight.  ½ magazine w/ no provision for sling ring. Excellent walnut stocks.  Carbine butt plate. 90+% o/a original condition

Hello Rick,

No, that is not a safe assumption.  My research survey only covers serial numbers > 353999.

So, if I might ask, what are the serial numbers of the 1/2 mag. trappers that you have recorded?

Had the 1/2 mag SRC to the range yesterday. This carbine is very nimble to handle & the 3 Leaf Express at the 50 notch was right on the money. If only these guns could talk to tell it’s story!

AG, That will certainly be fun to take deer hunting Downeast. Those short mag carbines are fun to carry and quick handling in the Maine woods.
