OfflineHELLO EVERYONE, I HAVE RECENTLY ACQUIRED AN 1895 WINCHESTER CALIBER US 30, BEAUTIFUL RIFLE. MY ISSUE IS THIS. I CAN OPEN AND CLOSE THE ACTION WITH NO ISSUES. I HAVE LUBRICATED THE ACTION, IT WORKS VERY SMOOTHLY, TILL I PUT A CARTFIDGE IN THE CHAMBER.
WHEN I LOAN A CARTFIDGE IN THE CHAMBER, THE ACTION WILL NOT CLOSE COMPLETELY. IT STOPS ABOUT 3/4″ SHORT OF CLOSING. I AM PROBABLY DOING SOMETHING STUPID. WHAT AM I NOT DOING RIGHT ?
ANY SUGGESTIONS FROM THE GROUP. I AM NOT TRYING TO FORCE THE ACTION CLOSED, BECAUSE IT WORKS FINE WITHOUT THE CARTRIDGE I AM USING A DUMMY ROUND “SNAP CAP”. I HAVE EVEN TRIED A REAL CARTRIDGE, SAME ISSUE.
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK, ANYTHING HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED.

OfflineThis probably isn’t it, but sometimes given different cartridge headstamps, caliber markings and designations, there has been confusion in the three .30 caliber chamberings in the M1895 – i.e. 30/40, .30-03 and .30-06. So, are you sure you are using the correct cartridge for your rifle?

OfflineCheck the chamber for an obstruction, could be the neck of a case. If you can’t view it with a bore scope or mirror you may be able to feel it with a bore brush or patched jag.

OnlineHello Mike,
Your 1895 rifle doesn’t happen to be serial# 20677 purchased from Simpson LTD is it? If it is, read this thread and I would suggest returning the rifle. I see they still have it advertised with no problems and never revised the posting. It also has a someone’s social security number etched on the internals of the lever when the action is open. The chamber was so corroded and pitted, you could not chamber a round. Likely due to corrosive primers back in the day.
Here is the rifle still posted at Simpson, LTD:
