I just bought a pre 64 94 30/30 carbine, when I was looking it over I noticed the 005 stamp on the rear of the locking bolt and thought this gonna be a problem.
It was really cheap (that swayed me) and apart from that issue and the stock finish which resembled fence preservative it was in pretty good condition so I took it home.
I’ve discovered a number of other issues with it including one I’ve not seen before which is a lug sticking out about 2 – 3mm inside the right rear of the receiver, it looks pretty beat up but I’ve not seen one before as all my previous 94s have been 357 which come with their own set of problems.
I think it’s associated with the cartridge lifter. the lug looks like a screw and, if it is, it must be fastened to the right side cartridge guide as it doesn’t come through the receiver.
Does anyone have an idea of what it is?
I simply forgot to make an image but I’ll pull it apart again and take one and post it up.
I was right about the headspace cure, dependent on the cartridge the gun is a sob to close and with federal factory ammo locks up solid until fired when it freely opens and ejects. Winchester and PPU brass reloads cycle ok as does Hornady lever-revolution factory stuff with polymer tips, I’m pretty sure surface grinding couple of thou off the face of the locking plate/bolt should see it functioning ok.
The final issue is with the fore end band this is a world class pig to get back on!
