Thread chaser or Tap

Had to drill out a seized upper tang plug screw(3/16-36) to get it out. Now can’t get the new correct screw to start & some of the old screw is still in the threads. Tap it or chase it. Gotta buy both so be nice to purchase just one.  Any suggestions?

A thread chaser will only work if the rest if the screw is out. Its designed to straighten the old threads. You would need the tap to recut the rest of the old screw if you have it drilled out enough and you match the old threads otherwise you will have two sets of threads.

My gun smith finally contacted me after I posted this & he stated exactly what you’ve said Bob. Thank you for the info & reconfirming.

Does anyone make taps and dies for these old thread pitches?

Yes,

If you know the thread size and pitch you go to a tool supplier. You can check McMaster.com.  I have bought them before.

Bought a 3/16-36 tap from Mutual Screw & Supply. They get them from Irwin. The only thing is you have to buy 5 ?. $12 for 5, $13 for shipping. Go figure. Supply & demand.

I like McMaster for everything I need since with standard shipping it basically next day delivery because I’m close by and they always have it in stock. I buy drill bits, mills, plumbing, plastics and some small quanity of odd metals I can’t get locally

Could try Homestead, they sometimes have taps as well as screws.

A gunsmith should be able to fix the problem.  Good luck to you.

Received the tap & worked perfect Bob. Had to order minimum of 5 at $6 each with shipping but no other option.
