Because Winchester listed and sold sling eyes as a separate item, I am of the belief that many of them that we encounter today were installed outside of the factory.  Period installed Winchester sling eyes are not much of an issue (in my opinion), but modern “Uncle Mike’s” or similar are a significant detractor.

Bert,

As a Collector, you bring up a very good point.

In more of the modern day world of shooters and hunters, the Uncle Mike’s swivels and it’s attachments are fine, but not on the collectable pieces that we enjoy. I too get irritated by their detracting on an older specimen.

With that said, the older all original and correct, UN-bubba’d pieces that we enjoy, can be a little harder to find, but well worth it. IMO! Smile

I really want it to end up with the setup that Henry has shown, and if I could locate an original sling , it would be ideal! Wish me luck, and thanks again to everyone who has posted on this thread.

I Will wish You “good luck” Robert, I’ve had that sling for quite a while and haven’t seen another since. I have several sets of “J” hooks but only the 1 complete sling, they’re tough to find, I’d have 8 more if they were available.Smile

I have located the eyes , and hooks . If I can get the dimension of the leather sling, I will make it for my use on this project until I can find an authentic Winchester sling. Would anyone know the dimensions of the front screw washer for a Lyman 21 sight ? I can’t find a clear picture, or description of what type washer it is. Thank you.

The washer is concave spring steel, Winchester Bob make all the parts for the model 21, but you may find it in a good hardware store

cj57 Thanks for your reply, I will check out the hardware stores to see if they have a suitable washer with the dimensions from your photo.

I wondered if anyone could please show a photograph of how the sling eye is attached inside the fore end cap of a 1894 Winchester rifle? I want to install sling eyes on my rifle and want to make sure I do it correctly, Thanks Bob.

Here’s a few examples from 1894 carbine:

An 1894 Rifle outside letter range, and on the fence as to whether it was added or not.  Have a few other examples I can check if I remember this weekend.

And an 1886 that I think was added (forend cap with sling ring provision), letter doesnt mention sling, but the install looks same as Bob’s example).  It does swivel freely, unlike the 1894 examples.
