Jim, The best reference for set trigger parts is George Stone’s book “The Winchester 1873 Handbook” pages 101 to 108 offer pictures, drawings, and measurements. Basically, there are two types of hammers, outside sear over-ride and center sear over-ride. Each has it’s own style of sear over-ride and sear kickoff. I don’t know which goes to what model. These three parts have to be used for the correct hammer. T/R
Jim,
There are 2 differences, first is the location of the fly on the hammer. The fly is a small pivoting metal piece that rides the sear over the half cock when the hammer is dropped using the set feature. Normally when you pull the trigger by finger you can’t release the trigger fast enough to allow the sear to catch the half cock but when the set is used the hammer is released momentarily and rides the hammer the rest of the way and the fly carries the sear over the half cock. The early hammers had the fly on the outside edge of the hammer and then later it was moved to the center of the hammer as you can see in the picture. The second differance is the evolution of the hammer checkering through the years.

Thanks TR. If you can find this book I’d like one but not for $200. Is there any other hard to find information in this book?
Chuck, The Stone book is a 1873 parts book with pictures and drawings of most parts. The drawing have measurements in .001’s of a inch., thread pitch, barrel taper, and size at muzzle & breech for all types of barrels. A section on 22 magazine tubes. With the pictures and text this is a must have if your doing what Jim is. It’s 134 pages so I guess you could copy one. I bought a book back in the early 90’s, and have gone to the book for reference hundreds of times. It does not have all the answers but enough to keep you on the right track. I wish he would have done books on other models. T/R
