If you want a “maintenance coat” of oil, then use real oil. None of the so-called “oil finishes” are that. Not Tru-Oil, Formby’s Tung Oil, not Minwax’s Antique Finish nor anything else. They are all different formulations of varnishes and contain about as much “oil” in them as Campbell’s has pork in Pork and Beans.

Thanks, was wanting to avoid varnish. Thinking I’ll get a can from Brownell’s. Not sure I’ll be able to find BLO locally, ever try the Brownell’s product? Says it has dryers.
You can get BLO in any hardware store, Lowe’s, HD, even Walmart. None of it is true boiled linseed oil but has additives to make it dry faster. Today’s store bought BLO may not be anything like Winchester’s original boiled linseed oil.

Thanks for the links, tung oil it is. I might actually take this old rifle to the range or even hunting someday and I now understand that a linseed oil is mostly cosmetic. Now I’m having second thoughts about leaving most of the scratches alone. Today’s hot sun pushed some of the oil out, may try that again before I start the tung oil process.
