I just acquired a Model 94 30-30, made in 1954.  First Winchester!  What is a recommended approach to giving the gun a “cleaning”?  I’ve seen YouTube videos where they take the components out of the receiver – LOTS of pieces!  I’ve got EEZOX or Grizzly Lube as a Clean, Lube, Protectant.  I also have a set of the correct size flat-blade bits from Brownell’s to remove any screws.

Sort of feel like a 1954 Ford coming to a Model T club rally – my 1954 is practically new compared to what most here are collecting and restoring.  Reading through most of the posts here, there’s a wealth of information I appreciated enough to become a paid subscriber so I don’t feel guilty about asking questions!

Thanks!
Bruce in TN.

Bruce, When I started collecting, I took my newly purchased Winchesters and immediately disassembled and cleaned them. Some of those guns needed it and others didn’t. I found myself turning screws that had never been turned since they left the factory, removing wood that was sealed to the metal, and all the visually evidence that the gun was honest. I have long since regretted down grading these pieces of history. If someone has been there before you, ok, but you don’t want to be the first to remove the proof of age. T/R

No matter what kind of screwdriver one uses the trained eye can see evidence of the screw being turned.
I’d just wipe it down and be happy that I didn’t take it apart.

Lots of collecting, not a lot of restoring going on here.

Bruce, congrats on your first Winchester.  May there be many more.

As for cleaning, I kind of followed the same path as TR in taking apart and cleaning these guns when I first started collecting and have come to regret doing so as the years past for the same reason he stated.  As TR and Tedk mentioned, if youve got a discerning eye, you can tell the ones that have been taken apart and when one hasnt.  That said, the one thing that did benefit me down the road in understanding each of the models was taking them apart, studying its parts and how they interact and then reassembling.  Having that experience was helpful in understand functional issues that seldomly occur.  Really, just wipe down the outside, light lube in the receiver, and keep the bore clean and you should be good.

You don’t need to take any of it apart.  Use oil and wipe it down and lube all of the moving parts.  Wipe off any excess.  Then clean and oil the barrel.  If you don’t use the gun then wipe it down with a light coat of oil once or twice a year.  A very light amount of oil is all that you need.
