I have just acquired a model 94 in .30 WCF manufactured in 1898. I had noticed when looking at the rifle before I bought it that when the action was cycled the shell carrier would sometimes not lift. I attributed this to years of crud and neglect. Now that every thing has been cleaned up, the carrier lifts but requires a fairly firm cycle of the action to get it to pop up. If you cycle the action slowly, it will stop before the carrier pops up and you have to give the lever a bump to make it actuate. Is this consistent with this model or should I be looking for a specific worn component?

It sounds like it could be one or two things: 1) the carrier spring is worn out, 2) the carrier, where the carrier spring engages the carrier, is worn (or it could be both the carrier spring and carrier that are worn out). Most likely will be the carrier spring is worn or weak. Ive had this happen before and replaced with original parts. You can find a carrier or carrier spring on gunbroker.com or ebay.

Here is a pic of a carrier spring for sale online but this one has some wear on it (see arrows pointing to wear). The area indicated should form a sharp triangular shaped face across its length. (Click on the image to view)

That one doesnt look too bad from what I can see. Most, if not all, that you find will be used. For $10-15 its worth a shot (at least that is what I think they are bringing these days, maybe a little more if the screw is included)

After I took the picture I put it back together and loaded some snap caps in it and cycled it a few times. I guess it’s naybe not as bad as I had thought. I have nothing to compare it to. I was expecting it to be effortless I suppose. I will still keep an eye out for one tomorrow at the show I’m going to. I may even look for another carbine to bring home.
