I would like to replace the butt stock and butt plate on a third model 1890 rifle, using a vintage replacement stock. If I could find a good quality unaltered stock with a butt plate in place, is the fitting in the wrist / tang area straight forward or am I asking for trouble? Were there period changes to the stocks I should be aware of?
Thanks
I’ve found there to be a very slight difference in first model stocks VS. second and third models. The first model stocks tend to be very tight if they are fitted onto second or thirds. It usually requires a small bit of inletting to get them to fit proper. Second and third model stocks seem to fit each other with no difficulty’s.

I agree with Erin. The first model stocks are hand fitted to the non take down receiver. The second and third models are take downs and the wood to metal fit is not as finely fit.
