The cap itself is retained by 2 screws.  But it can’t slide off the magazine tube until the magazine-barrel band and mag plug are removed.

The band’s retaining pin can be punched out from left to right with rifle upside down.  BUT the band is dovetailed into the base of the barrel so how is it removed?  Plug removal appears simple.  Any advise appreciated.  BK

Bruce,

You don’t have to remove the mag tube retainer to get the cap off. Remove the screws from the cap and pin from the tube then  slide the cap forward a little so it does not pinch the tube. Lube the tube with oil so it slides better through the tube retainer ring. You can leave the end plug in the tube as long as you rotate it so the cap disengages the barrel slot. Your guns looks like its has some high finish so you might run the chance you are going to scratch the blue on the tube doing this.

Thanks Bob, that was quick.  This is the same 64 that was the subject of the sling swivel mount thread from over a year ago.  I’d like to remove the cap so I can send it to anyone (subject of my next post) who can mill a rear, buttstock mount to fit the dovetail in the forearm end cap.  That will be easier than shipping a complete rifle.  This rifle has an 85-90% finish and I’ll use lots of grease when I slide the cape over the tube.  Nov-2015-004.JPGImage EnlargerHere’s a photo of that end cap missing the swivel mount.

Thanks, that was simple and the nose cap is off.  Now to a new thread.
