Picked up a Model 1892 manufactured in 1892. It needs a good cleaning and some TLC. Honest original gun out of someones closet in Massachusetts. The screws have never been turned. The metal finish is 70%+ the wood is good but a bit dark and dirty and the butt plate is rusted. Several questions:
1. It is a takedown. What is the correct procedure to remove the barrel?
2. Best way to clean the wood without damage? Finish looks to be an oil finish.
3. Any trick to lighten up the wood? Again without damage to the finish.
4. Plan to buff out he butt plate with a fine brass wheel. Any tricks I should know?
Any other advice and/or suggestions?
Thanks

Found a youtube video on how to use the takedown feature.
Clean under the barrel bands so you don’t scar the tube. Soak the area for a few days, periodically twisting the tube and cleaning. Move the assembly out a little and clean the area. Repeat the soaking and cleaning until you are sure there is no grit between the tube and the band.
Seen a lot of messed up finishes because the gun was not cleaned first.
If you havent already gotten it apart, as cwatcher says, be sure to clean and lube the magazine tube the best you can before unthreading, as mentioned, grime can scratch the finish on the magazine tube. Once the mag tube is unscrewed and clear of the receiver, open the bolt/lever, then rotate the barrel assembly and remove.
Wouldnt do too much other than a good wipe down and cleaning of the bore. Wouldnt buff out anything or try to lighten the stocks. You could get into a situation real quick that could be detrimental to the condition of the rifle.
If possible could you post a pic to see what youve got. Would like to add to my 1892 TD survey. Would need the caliber and SN, barrel shape, mag length, etc.
