Threw together a quick update of our work at the Lassen College gunsmith school as we finish up our first machine shop courses.  Now it’s time to throw an 1895 in the truck and head out on the ranch.  It’s opening day of deer season!!

Mark,

I’m enjoying all the videos.  Please pardon an uniformed question on this most recent video regarding the bluing process.  I note the parts set in a basket and then into the tank…do the contact points (where the parts rest in the basket) get properly blued or do you shuffle the baskets a little to get complete coverage.

Pardon my ignorance, just curious.

Great video, once again. Still impressed that they take the time to teach you how to make your own tools. Just another reason I’ll never claim the title of gunsmith. Hope you have a safe & enjoyable hunt.

Mac,  That’s a great question.  In the interest of brevity, I only showed some short clips of the bluing process so you didn’t get to see us pull the parts from time to time and rotate them.  You’re right that the contact points with the basket wouldn’t properly blue otherwise.  Thanks for watching.  Mark

Thanks Mike.  I had an enjoyable day hunting with friends.  We passed on a couple of young bucks today.  I may get another chance before I have to head back to school.  Mark

Mark-

Looks like an awesome facility. Any plans for upgrades to the home shop?

Mike.  Fortunately, our shop on the ranch is very well equipped with some of the same equipment used in gunsmithing.  Of course, there will be quite a bit of tooling to buy.  The big decision I will have to make is whether to go to the expense of setting up for caustic bluing.  Mark
