Im in the process of refinishing the wood on my 1892 SRC. Someone had stripped the wood and applied a wax finish. Im using the John Kay Winchester Oil. Did Winchester originally finish the stocks with the buttplate installed? The reason I ask is that there was a lot of dried oil finish on the sides of the buttplate and I dint know if it was from a previous refinish or the factory. Thanks

Cliff,

No they did not. Finish on the metal is a sign that  bubba has worked on it.

As Bob said, no they didn’t.  The ends of the buttstock should be free of finish and the buttplate end may have a slight indentation from the buttplate having been securely in place for years.

Thanks guys! This one has definitely been bubbafied in the past. I’m trying to make it right again.

As the guys mentioned, no they did not for the rifles equipped with metal butt plates.  But, to prevent future confusion, they did sand and finish the butt and butt plate together on those rifles with a black plastic butt plate, particularly the .22’s.

One has to be very careful not to round the wood corners where the wood meets the metal. It is extremely easy to do and a dead giveaway that the wood has been refinished in most cases.

That is why you should use a sanding block so you don’t round the edges as you come off the end of the wood.
