I do some mind restoration on some older winchesters.
I have tried fake color case hardening with mixed rersults.
I have thought about doing the real color case hardening using Brownell’s kit.
I am worried about the distortion of the metal by the heat.
Has anyone tried Brownells kit and how was the result.
Thanks
Bill
Anytime you used heat for case coloring you have the chance of distorting the metal so most guys that do it make steel blocks to put inside the receivers and other parts to keep them from distorting.

I do some CCH projects. Brownell’s equipment and charcoal should work fine. But be careful with the temperatures…Brownell’s instructions use quench temperatures that are too high and will distort many receivers.
Color case hardening is truly an art and a learning process. If you really would like to get into it, I recommend studying
this forum thread. It’s a wealth of good information…..

Don’t begin with your final project. You might want to experiment with some stuff that doesn’t matter to you but it would have to be the same type of metal.
