A while back I stumbled onto an unmolested attic-find Winchester 1873 in 38-40. It was orange, crusty and rough in most places but is was complete and kind of functional. I needed a project, the price was right and I hadn’t done anything overtly stupid in a while so it came home with me.

After a lot of soaking in a bucket of ATF and acetone, gentle scrubbing and as much TLC as I could muster, I ended up with this:
No matter what I did, the bore still looked like a Nuevo Laredo sewer pipe the day after Menudo Monday. It was fully functional and I could hit a 12″ plate at 50 yards most of the time. I started looking for someone to put a liner in the barrel. Most only lined 22’s or wanted to replace the original barrel. I finally found Randall Redman in Washington. He specializes in relining barrels and did an excellent job. I highly recommend him!

Nicely done! By coincidence I had a rough old 1892 in 32-20 relined by John Taylor in Puyallup, Washington. I think he’s more a machinist than gunsmith but very talented. Nice shooting!
