I recently picked up a Model 73 that had been sleeved to 32-20. The old rifle looks real good and all but it won’t extract the cartridges. I took it down and found a flat spring of some sorts under the extractor? I don’t think it is part of the extractor system as it never shows up on any parts diagram that I have seen. I took it out and the darn thing still wont’ extract the cartridges. I have an old Model 76 to compare it to and immediately I noted that the extractor in it slides down a grove and catches the rim of the cartridge. I think the sleeve is preventing this from happening on the 73. This picture shows that the end of the sleeve extends beyond the grove where the extractor slides down to catch the rim of the cartridge. Am I on the right track here? If so is the only way to fix this to remove the barrel and take a file to it?

That looks like your problem. The cut should taper to the edge of the chamber. Removing the barrel is the best and proper way to get in there with a file. You can do it with a long narrow file coming up from the bottom with the receiver striped but it will be difficult. do not remove any more metal than necessary. If you remove to much and expose the side wall of the shell you could have it blow out when you fire.

Sounds like someone has trying to fix the extractor problem by putting that piece underneath the extractor, in an effort to shimmy it upward, and they didn’t realize the needed to cut the sleeve instead.

First fix the taper cut in the barrel then see if the extractor will work. They might have filed on the extractor trying to get things to work and my need to be replaced.

The barrel came off very easily…tapered the extractor slot on down through the sleeve…back together…works like it should now. The cartridges slide in nice and smooth and eject with out a glitch…Thanks for the support…Now while I am on a roll, I think I will tune up the old 76, it has been a little tough to lever those 45-75 cartridges in as well.
