As suggested, I ordered a letter from Cody Museum and although it provided interesting historical info there was no indication regarding the configuration of the butt stock. Pursuing another avenue, I searched for, and found, a photo of a ’94, 38-55, manufactured in 1897 (same year as mine) with a crescent shaped stock and metal plate.
I will move ahead with replacing existing stock with the crescent design and am wondering if anyone has experience with a reliable source. The only company I’ve come across is Midwest Gunworks who offers a variety of designs.
Would appreciate any thoughts on Midwest or recommendations for other sources.
Thanks
John from Charleston
I would much prefer a “period” stock rather than new. How/where would I search for a vintage stock/plate?
BTW, I notice that you’re from “the County”. My wife and I (originally New Englanders) are summer Mainers escaping the heat and humidity of Charleston for the cooler and slower paced Port Clyde.
Thanks for making contact and I look forward to your suggestions.

When a CFM letter does not mention the butt it means it was delivered with the standard butt. Crescent butt was standard.
Hi, I’m from ‘The County’. This is God’s country up here, but He don’t stay up here in the ‘wintah’.
Ebay is always a place to look for old winchester stocks. What condition is You’re rifle? I have a couple of original stocks. Email a picture of your rifle to [email protected] Dana
