The stock on this rifle was cut to remove approximately 1″ leaving a bare wood butt.
Questions: 1.) was original stock flat or curved?
2.) in either case was the original buttplate hard rubber or metal?
3.) Any recommendations as to a source of a vintage buttplate or reproduction?
Thanks!

Hello John,
It is not possible to answer your questions without knowing what the exact configuration of your Model 1894 originally was. The only way to get that information is to contact the Cody Firearms Museum records office, and pay for a Factory letter. Why do you believe that it is an 1897 vintage Model 1894? Is the serial number in the 18572 – 33108 range?
If the butt stock was cut down (shortened), no original butt plate (regardless of type) will ever fit back up to it again. You will need to replace the entire butt stock and butt plate, and match it up to what is listed on the factory letter.

Bert- Thanks for this information. I learned of the vintage from the WACA database and yes, the serial # is 23353. Turnbull Restorations can put on a hard rubber (post-64) butt plate but I think I’ll keep looking and, if possible, replace the stock and add appropriate butt plate. Thanks again.
