My wifes father collected Winchester rifles for many years.  He dealt with few dealers over the years, mostly Merz.  The bulk of his collection is gone.  However, we kept an 1892 rifle made in 1904 that appears to be restored.  In any case, it is absolutely the best looking rifle of the whole collection, with really pretty wood and it is flawless from blue to bore. We kept it because we were told it was practically worthless and we did not want to give up such a pristine rifle for nothing.  Could anyone let us know the range of “worthless” that might apply to such a rifle?  My wife wants to trade for a target pistol and I do not know how to enter into this transaction…re value.   Thanks for any information you might provide.

First, which caliber is it? Is it a standard Sporting Rifle, or something else? Are you absolutely sure that it has been restored? Can you provide a link to pictures of it?

Thanks for your reply.  I will post pictures next week….I’m off hunting till then.  It must be restored.  Its perfect.  All of the other rifles had a certain old patina about them and still attracted a lot of attention when sold.  It’s a 32-20.  I don’t know what type it is.  Thanks again.

Ok…so heres the restored 92…again…I would like to know what a  decent trade figure might be against a target pistol for my wife to shoot at the farm…when I sold good winchesters some years ago, I was advised restored rifles  were not worth much….this one was so pretty I kept it.  Thanks sincerely for any advice you all might give…

Defiantly refinished RBR (round barrel Rifle)

a great Vintage economical shooter for someone  I think $ 500- 600 would be a good deal for the buyer, so he is getting the refinish for less than free . This is why its not worth it to spend the money on a refinish, unless you really want to do it for yourself , and dont care about the loss

Probably more like $500 or a bit higher.

I would agree……maybe $500-800. Although most of the folks on this forum, including myself, wouldn’t want this type of rifle………I have found that there’s a large number of people walking into a gun show that just want “pretty” guns. I have had some good luck getting rid of a few refinished guns I ended up with. You would be shocked at what that rifle might bring on Gunbroker.

Hmmm, that might be just a little over the top, especially the big green off-breed logo.

Yes, please tone it down by reducing the size of the signature pictures!

$500-$800?

http://www.winchesterguns.com/products/rifles/model-1892/model-1892s-in-current-production/model-1892-short-rifle.html

$1,069 for a current Model 92 Short Rifle!  I’ve never bought a restored gun but at least Hawkman’s 1892 is the real thing.
