OfflineHowdy,
I recently acquired a vintage, solid frame, octagonal barreled Model 92 rifle chambered in 25-20. Long story short, this rifle was used as a club immediately before putting a bullet in someone approximately 105 years ago. This resulted in the loosening of the magazine tube as the dovetail for the tenon became a little wallowed out.
More concerning however, and likely related, is the loose barrel. There is considerable rotational play of the barrel in the receiver, none fore and aft. It seems the rotation may be limited by the handguard assembly, and I suspect if I were to remove it I would be able to remove the barrel by hand, though I have not yet taken down the rifle to confirm this. What is likely to be the issue and how repairable is this, within reason? It’s a very solid rifle otherwise, which I would like to put back into service.
Thanks in advance.

OfflineYou’re probably already telling yourself this…a gunsmith should examine it. Hopefully it’s as simple as twisting the barrel back in and maybe securing it with a little Locktite. If the barrel is damaged and the receiver is ok then you could search for a replacement barrel.
If it were mine, I would remove the forearm and see what’s going on knowing full well it’s going to a smith either way. You might save yourself some $$ if you diagnose a bad barrel and/or receiver.
If the screws don’t move freely and you don’t have proper screwdrivers then STOP or risk damaging your gun.
