I have an 1886 Winchester takedown rifle that I am having difficulty in taking it down. The magazine tube comes out without issue, however; the barrel will not budge. Is there a gentle way to persuade the rifle to come apart or should I leave this to a gunsmith?

First question… do you have the lever/action open when you are attempting to turn/twist the barrel assembly?

Second question… which direction are you attempting to twist the barrel assembly?

I had the action open when I tried to turn the barrel counterclockwise.

I am new to collecting Winchester rifles so admittedly I have a lot to learn. When I began looking for information on the rifle it looks like a takedown rifle as the magazine tube has a lever to aid in removing the tube. So I presumed that it was a takedown rifle. According to the Winchester Collector site the rifle was built in 1904 and is chambered in 45-70. The barrel is half octagon and half round barrel. The magazine tube is shorter than the barrel. There is checkering on the foregrip and on the pistol grip, shotgun style buttplate. Vernier sight on the wrist. I sent off for the factory letter and it should be here in another week or two.

It appears that you were doing everything correctly. I recommend laying the rifle on its side (either side), then applying several drops of Kroil to the seam between the barrel assembly and the receiver frame. After an overnight soak, try taking it down again. If it still won’t budge, try warming the take down up with a hand held hair dryer.

After soaking and it still wont budge, you may want to take the magazine tube out, forearm cap and wood off to see if someone hasnt machined and bolted the TD lug/barrel to the receiver by drilling out the taps for the 3 adjustment screws and threading into the receiver as a way to hold the receiver and TD lug together. Sounds crazy but ive seen it done before only they were pinned together.  Doesnt hurt to look.
