The dust cover on my ’73’ (1882) will not snap shut. I am thinking wrong one? I hope one of you can tell me & give me direction on the correct fix. ThanksRIMG4720.JPGRIMG4722.JPGRIMG4723.JPG

The mortise (dust) cover is not supposed to ever “snap shut”.  When you open the action with mortise cover closed, it is moved to the rear by the bolt, and it will stay in that position until you manually close it by hand.

I too have tried various covers on a fixer-upper, and I believe you mean close completely, even if closed manually.

If not the issue, to others, why would a cover not close completely manually?

that is exactly what I mean. The tapered piece on the cover stops it from closing all the way. It seems like it should be flat. Rick

In looking at your pictures it looks like you have a repo tab installed and need to be fitted to the receiver so it does go in. the other thing is the spring under the dust cover is suppose to drop into a notch on the under side of the cover. This is what keeps the cover closed. Over time the spring wears away.
