Hello Fellas,
Trying to figure out a problem with a 1873 winchester. I can cock back the hammer to the half cock position, and pull up the lever to depress the safety bar and pull the trigger and the hammer will fall. Also I can pull back the hammer to the full cock position and pull the trigger without depressing the safety bar and the hammer will fall. Any one have a problem like this?. Seems when I cock the hammer back to the half cock position the sear does not want to lock into the hammer notch. Could this possibly be a week or damaged trigger /sear spring? Any advise appreciated Thanks
Rob,
The half cock not holding is a broken half cock notch on the hammer. The trigger block not working is another issue. Usually trigger blocks are fairly reliable so my guess is someone has been in there messing with it. You should be able to see the trigger block from the outside, if you push the pin sticking out of the tang you should see the block behind the trigger move up and out of the way of the trigger.

Thanks Bob, the notch on the hammer at 1/2 cock is not as deep as the one in your picture. I can pull the trigger on 1/2 cock with the finger lever depresses and it will still fire. I guess that could be the problem, Many thanks again Bob, you are a valuable asset to these forums and I appreciate you and your knowledge and also the cut away pictures are very helpful.
