All,

have noticed a problem with getting onto the Forum section from my IPhone.  Every other section works fine but when you try to to the forum it says “documents not found on this server”.  Never a problem on a computer but seems to have recently become an issue on my iPhone 5.

Appreciate any feedback on this.

Regards,

I recently tried to update my 5, nice person at the Verizon store told me they weren’t working well after latest updates. Planned obsolescence, I guess. 7 is pretty spectacular, I’m glad I upgraded. My 5 never worked especially well with the forum. Not sure if that has anything to do with your phone’s issue but it’s something worth considering.

That’s why I use my phone for talking and texting exclusively and my home PC for everything else.  Works for me.

Maybe off subject, but maybe not – hijack not intended…………

Has WACA considered developing iPhone and/or Android Apps for access to the website? I believe this would appeal to our younger members (and those of us with smart phones), as well as make joining the group more attractive for the younger crowd. This subject may tie in with recently expressed concerns relating to attracting the younger generation to the Winchester collecting hobby……….

Sounds like something that should be looked into, for the younger crowd, as you mention.  It seems everyone is pushing for downloading their apps, most obnoxiously every local TV weather station.  If the powers that be do consider an app there needs to be some controls in place to avoid being inundated by inane posts.  Perhaps for WACA Members only.

Gents, the WACA site is written in WordPress which is already designed to scale on any device, so a dedicate app is not really necessary.  It really works beautifully on an iPad.  In fact, I like viewing the magazine on the iPad over my PC because I can get comfortable in an easy chair and hold the iPad like i would a hard copy and easily swipe the screen to view it page by page…..

I wasn’t aware of that so it is good information to know.  Will have to consider your easy chair suggestion when my current subscription expires and I renew with the electronic-only membership (save the trees).

Gentlemen,  If you open the WACA site in your browser on any mobile device then select “Add to home screen” an app style icon (see image) will be installed on your home screen and will instantly and conveniently access the site through your device browser.

As Rob stated above, the entire site is mobile ready and this added little feature makes it quite convenient when you’re on the go, or just leaning back in your easy chair!

Enjoy!

it might be an obsolescence problem but I have no problem getting on the website, by clicking on the waca icon in my browser.  the problem develops once I want to go to the forum.  this worked fine a month ago, but started having problems and now cant get to forum section whether or not I am logged in.  just wondering if it is the phone, phone version, or a problem with the website.

thanks,

I’ve started having the same problem on my iPhone 7 as well. I haven’t had the time to figure out what is wrong yet.

IOS 11 has just come out for the iPhone & iPad. Maybe something in there will help. Worth a try.

My iPad and Samsung phone are both having the same problem tonight and both have been recently updated in the past few weeks.

I came upstairs and can get on with no problem on my computer but absolutely cannot get on with either the iPad or my Samsung (Android/Google) phone tonight.

Had the same issue a few weeks ago but it went away.

Hope you can fix it so I don’t have to climb the stairs to view and post as that is just cruel and unusual punishment Cry

I have used my iphone exclusively on this site. It wasnt until recently when I was forced to update to 10.0 that the problems surfaced. It sometimes reads “there was a problem with the website and has been refreshed”.. then it goes blank. Have not experienced this with any other site.

Wont keep me away though..

Thanks for the confirmation that I don’t need to cut back on the red wine.  Thought I was dreaming for a while.

I have version ios 10.3.3 on my iPhone 5, which they say is the current version.

will have to wait to see if next release helps the situation.

regards,

Gents,

First, I apologize for these issues.

I recently updated my iPad to iOS 11 and the magazine still displays perfectly on it.  I just got an iPhone 8 and during the set-up of the new phone, I restored it from my old phone’s backup.  The magazine won’t display on it.

I have compared the Safari settings on both devices and the only thing I can see that’s different is “Web Site Data”.  The iPad shows the WACA site but the phone does not.  I think that is where cookies from the site are stored which I believe need to be there for the magazine to display.  I’m currently researching the issue and will meet with the IT group this week to resolve this once and for all.

I also believe that on a PC, regardless of browser used, it must allow cookies.  If your browser is set to block cookies, the mag won’t display.

Once i figure this out, I will write an article on how to fix this on all devices.

Again I apologize for this inconvenience.

Stay tuned….

You may be onto something there, Rob, with the “cookies” issue.  I use Firefox and tried to access old issues and had no problem.  I allow “cookies” only for the current session and they are deleted after exiting.  I then exited that window and manually deleted all “cookies” and then tries to access the old issues again.  This time I had to re-log in (though I was still logged in to WACA) before being able to access the old issues page.  After that, no problem with viewing old issues.

Maybe my iPad problem is different.  It is not about the magazines, I simply can’t get onto the forum at all with my iPad or Samsung phone.  I can access the WACA website but when I click the “Forum” tab it gives me this message on both the iPad and Samsung (Android) phone.  I can access the forum with no problems on my computer.

It has been doing this off and on for the last few months.  It will go away for awhile and then the problem crops up again.

Thanks for all your efforts in trying to resolve the problems.

Best Regards,

Gentlemen,

Here’s what we have found out.

For the iPhone, we added a Login button at the top of the “hamburger” menu (the three lines in the upper right of the screen–tap on them and you’ll get a drop-down menu).  If you are already logged in, log out and then log back in.  This will reload all of the cookies needed for the magazine to display.  I did this on my iPhone and now it works perfectly.  iPad works the same way except the larger screen will display all of the tabs directly, including the login button, without a hamburger menu.

For the PC, regardless of the browser you use, make sure it accepts cookies and a cooking blocker is not active.  once you set your browser to accept cooking, then log out and then log back in to load the cookies.

Additional tip:  On iOS devices, it is sometimes helpful to make sure all other browser windows are closed, then login to the WACA site.

Please give this a whirl and let me know how you make out.

This fix works just fine on my PC using Firefox.  I use Ad Block Plus and just found out that I can turn that off just for wichestercollector.org.  Did so and had no problems with forum or with viewing old magazine issues, except for the FALL 1987 edition.
