The actual one used in the movie sold at auction less than two years ago for $88,500.  You should be able to build one for less than that.  Are you going to go with a 16 inch barrel?

I believe that his was an 18.5” barrel.

I plan to use a barrel from Winchesterbarrels.com

I need a good condition action

It’s funny as I’ve seen different photos of his carbine.  In some, it looks like it’s about 16 inches and in others, it looks a couple inches longer.  Different photo angles I suppose.

Good luck with your project.

Didn’t he have more than one that he actually used in different films?  RDB

Very interesting project. I am a huge John Wayne fan and would love to own a look a like to that carbine. How hard is it to come by these actions?

Good luck in finding everything you need. Would love to hear how your project progresses and some of the issues you have or will have.

Henry – glad to see you are such a dapper looking fella – all along I just thought you were a guy with nice cars and Winchesters.

Was able to get a 92 action in Vg condition but alas it’s a small caliber one.
what’s the best thing to do? Make a John Wayne lookalike in 32wcf or have someone knowledgeable convert it to 38wcf or 44wcf?

who could convert it?

I also can appreciate you’re project, and like many here have grown up with watching the Duke in his many movies.

With that said, and the information provided by others, wouldn’t it be easier to find, an aftermarket rifle, in the .44 caliber rifle that Stem bridge made for, him in his movies? Why go through all the hassles of reworking and doing all the extra time consuming work involved? Do you plan on shooting it, or just hanging it up? Either way, if you picked up one of the well made after market, short barrel rifles in the desirable .44 caliber, even with the large loop lever, you could re work that to look like the style that Stem bridge used to accommodate the Duke’s feel, and comfortable shooting grip, as I understand, he had them style it to his preference upon a better feel! It just seems like you’re going to a lot of extra time and work to get what you want. I can understand the look you’re after as far as the original movie prop that was sold at auction, and the Commemorative’s  are nice, and can be shot as well, and some even have a somewhat unlike real appearance to them, with their, “coined nickle finish”, look,(and in the 32-40 Caliber), but I really think that you could be overthinking this project. Just a different perspective, and not trying to chastise you here! IMO!

I also look forward to you’re results, as I too enjoy, you’re challenge.

Anthony
