OfflineTrying to migrate from my Fly-Fishing passion back to my Gun/Hunting fascination, it is not an easy transition for me. Anyway, one of things that brings me back to the wood and blued steel is the Tulsa Wannemacher Gun Show that is just around the corner, November 8 & 9 (7th too for us fortunate ones). I know I will see Roger and Mitch there – hope to see a few more.

OfflineDeg,
I can completely understand you’re situation, as my late friend and I always talked about the Tulsa show but never made it. Being a 13-=14 hour trip, we talked about it while traveling the three hours here in Ohio to the OGCA Shows we would attend and set up at. Being a Fly Fisherman myself with a group of twelve, that most have passed now, it can cause some issues. The other factor is it’s prime Hunting season, whether it’s a gun or Bow, and hunting the animals, White Tails, or Elk in the Rut is second to none. Then theirs the family side of things with daily commitments, and work.
So you’re not alone in you’re quest for trying to collect and maintain a hobby that we all enjoy. I think it can explain some of the older healthy guys who keep on chugging as they experienced many of the same dilemmas and challenges that life can throw at us!
Good Luck in Tulsa, and looking forward to you’re update, and possible pictures, and what you found!

Tulsa has intrigued me for years but I haven’t made it yet. I wanted to go to the Cody show and museum long before I realized I was a Winchester collector. I think Tulsa is a bit more than I can enjoy. I like a good steak now and then but I’ll never order the 72 oz steak at the Big Texan in Amarillo. I generally get the buffalo burger as I always have a few hours to drive after lunch. 4200 tables is mindboggling, these days a 300 table show is about all I can handle in a weekend…but I still want to go take a look someday. It would be great to see so many friends there but I’d have to cover a lot of ground just to see some and would never find them all. I’m wanting to go next weekend, we’ll see.

Anthony, I may have to reach out to you sometimes for a little Fly-Fishing advice – I surely enjoy it, but I am not very good at it.

OfflineDeg,
We mainly hit the 10 lb Steel head here in Northern Ohio, as we enjoy Steel Head Alley, all the way into Northern Pa. Some smaller Tout also as My oldest Son has really taken to it, and when he’s out in the Western states, he enjoys the different Species of Trout out there. Different technics for different fish, naturally.

You can always take a break at our table.
Thanks, Ben has made the same offer and he even has some great places to eat. Finding places to take a break and visit is certainly part of my game plan!

Very true – I have never fished for Steel Head, someday, hopefully.

OfflineThe Tulsa Gun Show is located close to the center of the lower 48 states. Oklahoma does not have any crazy laws and Tulsa is gun friendly making it a great trip for a collector.
Over the last 30 years I have missed only one of the Tulsa Wannemacher Gun Shows. My brother and I rent a table to have a place to sit down and it allows us to get in on Friday, set up day, that’s the bargain day. Most of the table holders are collectors. For us it’s a 12 hour drive so we leave on Thursday and come back Sunday. The general public walk ins have never had much to offer for me, my purchases have mostly been from old collectors with tables cashing in on their collections.
Because of the 11 acres with 4200 tables most people cannot see the trees for the forests. You have to look at every table and every item, make notes on items of interest so that you can find it again. The tops of the tables are constantly changing, dealers cannot dominate the show nor can rich collectors, it’s to big. You can rent an electric wheel chair if your feet can’t handle it.
Tulsa is a treasure hunt for me. T/R

I’m planning to walk it both days, no table for me but I will be looking for y’alls WACA banners….how else will I know you when I find you? 😉
I’ve only been to Tulsa once. The first day, Friday, I walked 7 hrs and did not see it all. Saturday I walked the part I did not walk on Friday. It only took another 4 hrs. The third day I tried to revisit the areas that were covered up on Friday. I hope to be there in April. My wife just had her second knee replaced so no traveling for me right now.
Hope you all find something nice to buy.

OfflineDeg,
Like Anthony, I too would love to go to Tulsa someday, but it’s an awful long way from here in Western, PA. This time of year is especially challenging with deer hunting and all. I also enjoy steelhead fishing the Lake Erie tributaries in northern PA, but I’m not very good at it.

OfflineI went to the Wannemacher show in Tulsa about ten years ago, when I was (not surprisingly) about ten years younger than I am now. It nearly killed me then, and I’m sure I did not see it all. Now I am ten years older, and that much more broken down. The WACA Show in Cody is more my speed. Many friends, and many places to sit and visit. Of course I am probably missing a lot of great bargains at Tulsa, but when weighed against the deductible on our medical insurance, maybe not such a great bargain after all. I hope all of you folks go and enjoy yourself on my behalf.

Mike…. just keep thinking about “All you can eat catfish!”…. plus, I’ve got your entry pass… don’t let me down! I flew to the Texas show… you can drive to Tulsa! Man up! 🙂
You’re right, it’s an easy drive even if a hotel stay is probably part of the trip. I’m knee-deep in a touchy situation related to one of my civic activities so I’m focused on that right now. I tossed some gasoline on that fire yesterday but it seemed like the right thing to do. Taxes and homeowners’ insurance premiums due soon so I won’t have to lug a lot of cash around. There’s a good chance I’ll be able to skip town but it will be a last-minute decision.

OfflineI understand the “civic duty” stuff… I was a mayor at one time. Common sense in that arena is getting scarce. FYI: I stay at the Sky Tree… it’s cheap, clean, basic breakfast (eggs, sausage, biscuts and gravy, coffee)… it’s about 3 miles from the show too. Easy access to the highway to Broken Arrow and ALL THE CATFISH YOU CAN EAT! 🙂 Hope you can make it. Ben
