My project is to restore Model 1876, caliber .45-60, sn 34679, to safe shooting condition which entails mostly disassembly, cleaning and re-assembly. Inside the lower tang is a small screw called the sear spring screw on the Homestead exploded view that none of my screwdrivers can get to because they are too long to fit between the tangs. Is there commercial  product that will fit or do people cut down something else. Is there a preferred set of tools for this rifle?

You have to make a screwdriver to fit in there or just leave it and clean it with it in place. If it were mine I would just pull the side plates, inspect and lub the toggles and shoot it.

It’s easiest to make your own. If you don’t have a gunsmithing screwdriver set it is a must. Replacement bits through Brownells are only a couple bucks each. Find the bit that properly fits the screw slot, heat the shank cherry red, bend it at a 90* angle and quench it in oil. Now you have an off set screwdriver. Suggest you use a pick and thoroughly clean the screw slot and soak the screw with kroil for a day or so for easiest removal.

Just get the correct apex bit and use a 1/4″ wrench to turn it.

I had to file down an shorten the bit I had. Work perfectly.

Like Bob said in his first reply, no need to remove this screw.  You can easily clean in and around it with a small copper brush or a stiff tooth brush.  It isn’t necessary to clean it so it sparkles, it doesn’t do anything anyway, as far as it’s function in shooting.  Just clean the crud out around it and put a little gun oil on it.
