Jeremy and I both patronize a place I call the Orphanage. Neither of us will try to beat you to this gun but I don’t want to say any more because we have dozens of lurkers here and I want you to get this gun if you decide to purchase it. I’m in Cody at the moment but Jeremy is a short drive from the Orphanage. I don’t know exactly where this rifle is, it’s a bit of an inside joke but I don’t want to explain it until you have a chance to make a decision on this rifle.

Oh I see , haha 😂
Thanks , I guess I better not say where it is , I have decided to purchase it and the guy told me he would hold it for me….. hopefully it’s still there ???
I was thinking about trading another Savage towards it but I don’t think I will come out on the winning end of the deal so I’m just going to buy it , should have just bought earlier before work but wanted to get some expert advice first. I’ll let you know if it’s still there when I return to pay for it .

Chris-
It’s a cool rifle and seems to be honest. I have a fondness for this cartridge but have never seen a 99 chambered for it. I also like the receiver sight because I’d need it to shoot it. I sold my only Savage awhile back to focus on Winchesters but I still enjoy seeing a nice one like this. I’ve learned not to walk away from an old gun in a store if I like it. I’ve missed a few when someone a bit more decisive came along and spotted it. It may sit in a rack for weeks or months but we’re not the only ones this old girl appeals to and we never know when a like-minded person may wander by or spot it on the internet.

Hey Mike ,
I agree , should not have walked away from it , but I wanted to run it by you guys with way more knowledge than myself first and I had it in my mind that I was going to trade another rifle towards it .
I was there the day before to pick up a single shot shotgun I had ordered from another store and happened to see that one in there cabinet . What really caught my attention was the caliber so I did a bit of research and returned to give it a closer look . It has a hairline crack behind the tang but other than that it looks to be in pretty good shape for a rifle made in 1904 .
The Savage I was going to trade towards it is a 1922 made 1899 in 300 Savage , the stock has been cut down but it’s in pretty good shape overall and I know I paid too much for it and won’t get my money back , certainly not from them anyway. I hope the guy kept his word and held it for me …..

Mike ,
The rifle was still there with my name on it so I didn’t hesitate to grab it . I cleaned it up and overall it’s in really good condition inside and out , all matching numbers on the receiver , bottom of the barrel , stock butt plate and forend . Here’s some better pictures of the rifle and barrel stampings .

Yup, correct caliber and barrel markings, matching numbers throughout =
I recall the 26 inch octagon barreled .38-55 rifle I had – also had the, “high pressure powder” markings. You don’t see those markings every day. The sight set-up is very desirable as well – just might have come that way. The two-leaf folding rear barrel sight matches up nicely with the tang sight. And I note there are no markings on the rear barrel sight – or around the barrel near the sight. This strongly suggests the rifle may have been shipped with that sight.

Steve ,
So there is know way to know for certain if it came with that peep sight ? Would it be worth my while to get a factory letter , can you even get one for that rifle ?

Nice looking Savage. I think that you did well on your purchase.
Thanks , I think it is my best buy ever . Got it for a good price , looking forward to hunting with it !
If you don’t mind me asking, what was that price? Vintage Savage 1899s are so underpriced relative to Winchesters, it makes you think you are getting a real bargain. And you are! Or, conversely, maybe Winchesters are just that overpriced???
Also, the Savage forum is shutting down at the end of August. I’d love to create a forum devoted to the Savage Model 1895 and 1899. How do you do that?

I paid $800.00 for it and yes it seems like they are selling low these days , I bought one through Cabela’s gun library about 5 or 6 years ago and paid a grand , I know I over paid but I saw one that I really wanted , it was my first 1899 and patience has never been a strong point for me but what the hell . I think I made up for that purchase today ….

The Savage Collector’s Forum on the 24 hour campfire sees quite a bit of participation. Of course they cover a lot more variations than just 1895’s and 1899’s.

You didn’t overpay. Just the sights are worth several hundred.

Steve ,
The one I paid $1000 for had a cut down stock , I couldn’t tell from the pictures they had and upon getting the gun in my hands it didn’t bother me too bad , I found an old butt plate on eBay and with a little fitting made it work , I can live with it anyway.

I’m glad to hear that you plan on taking the old girl hunting. I get a lot of satisfaction taking my vintage rifles hunting. Even more so if I get to fill a tag with one of them.
Kevin ,
Yes I also love taking those old rifles to the woods hunting , it gives me great pleasure even if I don’t harvest a deer but yeah it is definitely a bonus if that happens !

The prices vary, can’t recall what my Savage letter cost and it’s been awhile. They may offer a records search at a lower cost. If you’ll go to their site you will find all the details and more.

I think they charge $77 for a Savage letter
I just bought a Firearms membership and I thought I read somewhere that it included a number of free factory letters but then couldn’t find where I read that . It does say $77 for non members I believe and I also read where it said free or at a discount to firearm membership ?
