I know this may not be the place to be asking about old Savage rifles but I was looking for some experts opinion on this rifle I may purchase . Do you guys think this is original finish on this old 1899 ?Screenshot_20250711-113608.pngImage EnlargerScreenshot_20250711-113630.pngImage EnlargerScreenshot_20250711-113608-1.pngImage Enlarger

Appears to be a well worn, factory, high polish, mirror finish on the receiver.

Stocks don’t appear to be sanded/refinished

Looks like a mid-19-teens gun

Sounds like a fine decision to me.  Yes, that looks like old Savage mirror blue that looks like it should after many many decades of use.  Honest looking rifle.

The correct tang peep is a nice bonus.  They are pricey on the open market.

Any chance it’s a 250-3000?  I have yet to meet a Winchester collector without a weak spot for a good 1899.

It’s chambered in 38-55 which is the main reason I think I’m going to grab it !

Bill – I sure am not exempt from your statement.  Savage lever rifles have been a part of my collecting genre for 50 years.  My very first one was a .250-3000 takedown.

The .38-55 is a fine cartridge in the Savage 1899 and quite collectable.  I’ve had a 38-55 in the Savage octagon barrel, round barrel, round barrel short rifle and SRC.  The original poster should waste no time grabbing this one.

Here’s a close up of the peep sight , the blueing wear doesn’t match the tang , does that mean it’s not the original ?Screenshot_20250711-175619.pngImage Enlarger

Very different blue was used on the Savage receiver vs. the blue used on the tang sight.  I wouldn’t expect them to match.  The probability is that the tang sight was added later.  But that would be typical.

I’d post pics of the barrel and caliber stamps to determine if the barrel is original to the gun

I got a very poor picture of the barrel markings and forgot to get the caliber stamp , here’s the blurry picture of the barrel marking , it’s a terrible picture , I didn’t realize how blurry it was until I looked at it after the fact . As best I can tell it does match one of the same time frame .Screenshot_20250711-112504.pngImage EnlargerScreenshot_20250711-200101.pngImage Enlarger

You have a five day head start if it’s at the Ft Worth Orphanage!

Jeremy and I both patronize a place I call the Orphanage. Neither of us will try to beat you to this gun but I don’t want to say any more because we have dozens of lurkers here and I want you to get this gun if you decide to purchase it. I’m in Cody at the moment but Jeremy is a short drive from the Orphanage. I don’t know exactly where this rifle is, it’s a bit of an inside joke but I don’t want to explain it until you have a chance to make a decision on this rifle.
